Juventus pulled off the transfer of the summer by signing Cristiano Ronaldo and the Portuguese forward is already beginning to move on from Real Madrid after nine years in the Spanish capital. He has started to follow his new Turin-based teammates on Instagram, while the No.7 has also decided to unfollow Real Madrid on the social network. He is, though, continuing to follow those who were his teammates at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu, as well as former coaches such as Carlo Ancelotti and Zinedine Zidane.
The official Real Madrid Twitter account which had 31.97 million followers before his sale, has plummetted to 30.5 million at the time of writing. This means the European Champions reportedly lost over a million Twitter followers after their sale of Ronaldo. Conversely Ronaldo’s new club Juventus gained over 1.5 million followers in just 24 hours across its social media with 1.1 million coming from Twitter and around 500,000 coming from Facebook. An incredible increase considering their average followers gained in a day is 50,000 for Juventus’ Facebook page.
The 34-year-old has been used excellently as a social media marketing tool by Juventus with the tweet confirming his arrival getting 0ver 30,000 retweets and 60,000 likes.
Ronaldo’s effect on jersey sales has also been staggering. As soon as the official Ronaldo kit was released by Juventus, it immediately flew off the shelves with 520,000 jerseys sold in just 24 hours. According to Business Insider, that adds up to $62.4 million, nearly half the transfer fee.
Although clubs only tend to receive between 10 and 15 per cent of revenue the kit manufacturer generates from merchandise sales.
The numbers are especially impressive when you compare them to someone like Neymar, who according to Yahoo and Fox Sports compiled stats, only sold 10,000 jerseys in his first 24 hours as a PSG player.
The 520,000 figure is also over half of the total amount of jersey’s the Italian giants sold in the whole of 2016. What a deal this could be for Juventus both on and off the field
